About the Book

Drawing on both personal experiences and the latest scientific research, Dealing with Feeling gives readers a practical framework for understanding and responding to emotions. There are no “bad” emotions—only ones we haven’t learned how to manage. By exploring the science behind emotional regulation, author Marc Brackett offers tangible, evidence-based strategies, helping readers to identify their current emotions, determine how they want to feel, and implement a strategy to get there.

Marc Brackett, PhD, is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor at Yale University. He’s spent more than 25 years researching emotional intelligence and its impact on learning, relationships, leadership, and health. He’s the author of the bestselling book, Permission to Feel, and the creator of RULER, a preK-12 school approach to teaching emotional intelligence in over 5,000 schools worldwide.

Marc works with schools, Fortune 500 companies, and global organizations to help people use their emotions wisely and live better lives.

Many of us don’t deal with our feelings in healthy ways that produce desirable outcomes. Not being able to deal with our feelings leads to many of the challenges our world faces today – violence, division, and mental health struggles.

Brackett’s research shows that most adults were never explicitly taught how to manage emotions, either at home or in school. When children and adults develop skills to recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate (RULER) emotions early, they are less likely to turn to harmful coping mechanisms later. Children who grow up fluent in their emotions, supported by teachers and parents who model healthy regulation, thrive. This book was written to create a shift to ripple across workplaces, families, and governments, dramatically improving both mental health and societal functioning.

The book draws on both Brackett’s personal experiences and the latest scientific research to provide a practical framework for understanding and responding to emotions in helpful ways.

The book is 320 pages.

While Dealing with Feeling is not part of a series, it is the second publication from Brackett on the topic of emotional intelligence.  Brackett’s previous book, Permission to Feel, a best seller translated into 25 languages, introduces the five RULER skills of emotional intelligence: recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating. Dealing with Feeling delves deeper into the fifth RULER skill: regulating emotion.
